Rahul Gandhi returns as MP over 4 months after disqualification in defamation row

Date:

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as a Lok Sabha member on March 23 after a Gujarat courtroom convicted him in a defamation case and sentenced him to 2 years in jail.

The Lok Sabha membership of Congress chief Rahul Gandhi was restored on Monday.

The Lok Sabha (*4*) issued a notification asserting that his disqualification has been revoked and his membership restored.

Gandhi was disqualified as a Lok Sabha member on March 23 after a Gujarat courtroom convicted him in a defamation case and sentenced him to 2 years in jail.

A punishment for 2 years and above robotically disqualifies a lawmaker.

The Supreme Court on Friday final stayed his conviction, paving the best way for restoration of his Lok Sabha membership.
