Knife-wielding man dressed as Batman’s Joker sets Tokyo train on fire, 10 injured

Date:

As Japanese capital Tokyo celebrated Halloween on Sunday evening, a 24-year-old man dressed as Joker from Batman attacked passengers on a train, injuring around 10 people.

The man reportedly set fire on the train which was on its way to the city centre, also ferrying several merrymakers out to attend Halloween parties. As per local media reports, the suspected attacker was arrested by the police on the spot.

The site of the attack was the Keio express which was enroute to the world’s busiest rail station Shinjuku.

The suspected attacker stabbed an old man in his 60s, who was reportedly unconscious and in a critical condition. As per witnesses reports in local media, the attacker dressed as the comic book hero also poured some kind of fluid around the train to set it on fire.

A video broadcasted by a Japanese TV news channel and also posted on Twitter showed people fleeing the train compartment in panic with fire emerging in the background.

Passengers also had to squeeze themselves out of the windows of the train and onto the platform at a station where an emergency stop had been made. Firefighters, police and emergency vehicles were seen surrounding the station in local TV footage.

A witness told a local newspaper, “I thought it was a Halloween stunt. Then, I saw a man walking this way, slowly waving a long knife.”

Train service on the affected line remained partially suspended on Sunday.
