India logs 12,830 new cases, active cases drop to lowest since March 2021

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has reported on October 31 that India has recorded a total of 12,830 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. This is one of the lowest daily tallies of COVID-19 cases recorded in India ever since the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic hit the country.

With the new cases reported on Sunday, the overall tally of active COVID-19 cases in India has dropped to 1,59,272, which is the lowest in 247 days. The Health Ministry further stated that 14,667 fresh recoveries and 446 deaths have been recorded in India in the last 24 hours.

According to the ministry, the active cases account for less than 1 percent of the total cases, which stands currently at 0.46%, the lowest since March 2020. Since the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, a total of 3.42 crore infections have been recorded in India, of which, 3.36 crore have recovered, while 4.58 lakh have succumbed to the virus.

The government data states that a total of 60.83 crore COVID-19 tests have been conducted till now. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) also announced that a total of 11 lakh tests were conducted on October 30. The positivity rate of the country currently stands at 1.18 percent.

India recently crossed the 1-billion milestone of administering COVID-19 vaccine doses across the country, and the government has administered a total of 106.14 crore vaccine doses till now. The Health Ministry has also stated that over 13 crore unutilized vaccine doses are still present with the states and UTs for the public.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently in Italy, addressed the G20 summit yesterday and announced that India has plans to produce over 5 billion COVID-19 vaccine doses in 2022 and supply them around the world. He also talked about the recognition of vaccine certificates to facilitate international travel.
