Indian skipper Virat Kohli had announced that he would be giving up the role of the captaincy of the shortest format of the game ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 tournament in UAE.
As soon as the news broke, many speculated that Rohit Sharma would be the best candidate for the leadership role while youngsters like KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer or Rishabh Pant could take up the vice-captaincy.
However, former India selector Sarandeep Singh has backed the youngsters to take over the white-ball captaincy as that will give them enough time to evolve as a leader.
He added that making Rohit Sharma the captain for the ODIs and T20Is is not a long-term solution and India need to keep the 50-over World Cup in mind which is just a couple of years away.
“Rohit is a good choice (for white-ball captaincy), he is among your best batters. But the call the selection committee has to make is whether to make him captain for a couple of years (till 2023 ODI World Cup) or find a leader who can lead the team for a long time.
“If they are looking at the bigger picture, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are good choices,” Sarandeep, whose last assignment was India’s historic tour of Australia earlier this year, told PTI.
Currently, the side is placed fifth on the points table after they lost both their games against Pakistan and New Zealand.
