Fight for 2nd spot sees Rajasthan Royals edge past Lucknow as they win by 24 runs

Date:

Rajasthan Royals (RR), who opted to bat first have made sure to pocket a huge win against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. RR needed to restrict LSG to 159 or below to move to the No. 2 spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 points table.

The win by 24 runs has not only boosted their position in the points table but has also helped their NRR.

Now having 16 points in the IPL will help them confirm their spot in the top four. While it is not yet confirmed, they have done enough damage for other teams to be losing sleep.

Trent Boult and Obed McCoy’s two-wicket haul and earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal (41) and Devdutt Padikkal (39) made sure to keep the RR side upfront.

Chasing 179, LSG got off to a shaky start as they lost their opening batter, Quinton de Kock and Ayush Badoni in the third over of the innings – both delivered by Trent Boult.

LSG skipper KL Rahul along with Deepak Hooda did try to build in a partnership and anchor the innings, but could not stand longer as Prasidh Krishna removed the captain for 10 runs.

Later, all-rounder, Krunal Pandya came in and continued the proceeding with Hooda. The former looked in great touch and smashed Yuzvendra Chahal for a six.

After nine overs, LSG needed 118 runs off 66 balls and the side did need a strong partnership. Hooda also targetted Chahal for 13 runs in the 11th over and the much-needed 50-runs partnership was on. However, it could not stand for more as Pandya was dismissed by R Ashwin for 24 off 23.

It was the 14th over when LSG crossed the 100-run mark while Hooda brought up his 50 in 33 balls.

Hood’s great innings came to an end when he was stumped by wicketkeeper Sanju Samson. This wicket brought Jason Holder to the crease to bat with Marcus Stoinis, but the former was sent back by McCoy in the 17th over after scoring just a run.

LSG needed to score 68 runs to win and Stoinis was their last hope, but he too perished to Prasidh Krishna in the last over as RR won by 24 runs.

Earlier, a 64-run stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal (41) and captain Sanju Samson (32) along with a quickfire 39 off 18 balls by Devdutt Padikkal helped RR post 178 for 6 on the board.
