Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia shares new action plan on flight delays due to fog

Currently, three out of the 4 runways on the IGI Airport in Delhi are operational.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has introduced a new action plan to cope with fog-related flight disruptions nowadays. It has requested Delhi, Mumbai and 4 different metro airports to report incidents 3 times a day. The airports in addition to airways can even arrange ‘conflict rooms’ to handle any points about passenger inconvenience with immediacy. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Tuesday mentioned it’s going to even be ensured that there’s adequate CISF manpower availability round the clock on the airports.

This comes after the incidents of a passenger assaulting an IndiGo pilot on the Delhi airport and passengers of an IndiGo flight sitting on the tarmac of the Mumbai airport amid lengthy flight delays due to fog. Against this backdrop, aviation regulator DGCA on Monday issued a set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) after Scindia mentioned all stakeholders are working round the clock to minimise fog-related disruptions. In a submit on X on Tuesday, Scindia mentioned the ministry has sought “incidence reporting thrice daily for all the six metro airports.” Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata are the metro airports.

  • Also, adequate CISF manpower availability can be ensured round the clock, Scindia mentioned.
  • With respect to the Delhi airport, the minister mentioned runway RWY 29L has been made CAT III operational on Tuesday.
  • The operationalisation of RWY 10/28 as CAT III on the airport can be performed after re-carpeting work.

Currently, three out of the 4 runways on the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) within the nationwide capital are operational. IGIA, the nation’s largest airport, has 4 runways — RW 09/27, RW 11R/29L, RW 10/28 and RW 11L/29R. Out of them, three runways, together with CAT III-compliant RW 11L/29R, are operational. Scindia additionally mentioned the implementation of DGCA directives and SOPs can be monitored and reported repeatedly.
