That squeaking noise you hear is the brakes being pumped on the San Francisco 49ers hype train. The 49ers, a trendy pick for a breakout season, struggled in Week 1. They’ll try to turn things around when they host the Detroit Lions on Sunday (1:05 p.m. PT/4:05 p.m. ET, KPTV-12, FOX, or try FuboTV (free trial) ).
The 49ers (0-1) entered Week 1 having won five consecutive games behind quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to close out the 2017 season. More than a few observers picked them to earn a playoff berth in 2018. However, they were brought back to Earth by the rugged Minnesota Vikings defense in their 24-16 loss. Garoppolo threw three interceptions in the game and failed to complete at least 50 percent of his passes.
The 49ers will look to get some semblance of a running game going against the Lions after gaining just 90 yards on 26 attempts against the Vikings. The defense played very well, allowed just 17 points – the Vikings scored on touchdown on a pick-6 – and holding the Vikings to five punts on their first six possessions in the second half.
The Lions (0-1) got off to a great start in their game against the New York Jets in Week 1. Cornerback Quandre Diggs scored on a pick-6 on the first play from scrimmage, but a nightmarish third quarter in which they allowed 31 points and quarterback Matthew Stafford‘s four interceptions resulted in an embarrassing 48-17 home loss.
Stafford suffered a hyperextended knee after tackle Taylor Decker rolled up on his leg and he was sandwiched on another tackle that Stafford claimed just knocked the wind out of him. Stafford is expected to start, extending his streak of 112 consecutive starts.
