Serum Institute of India pushes for indemnity after foreign companies’ request | THP India News

MUMBAI: Serum Institute of India (SII) has “renewed’’ its demand for an indemnity against potential liabilities of its Covid-19 vaccine, after media reports suggested that the government is likely to support a similar request by foreign companies including Pfizer.
Sources said a formal request from the company is expected, as it believes that it is a “global norm’’ for vaccine manufacturers to get indemnity protection that waives all potential legal claims from severe adverse events linked to the vaccine.
Last year too, SII chief executive officer Adar Poonawalla had advocated for indemnity for vaccine manufacturers which would shield them from any lawsuits during the pandemic.
So far the government has not been in favour of granting the waiver.
