Finn Jones has responded to the cancelation of Iron Fist. It was revealed yesterday that Netflix was giving the Marvel series the axe after only two seasons. Jones played titular hero, Danny Rand, who was not only the star of his own show but central to The Defenders as well. That series is unlikely to continue either – although it’s not completely off the table.

Iron Fist was the fourth Marvel hero to debut on Netflix, but Danny didn’t share the same success as Daredevil, Jessica Jones, or Luke Cage. His first outing was poorly received by critics and proved divisive among fans as well. Although season 2 wasn’t perfect, a change in showrunner completely reshaped the result. The switch from Scott Buck to M. Raven Metzner effectively changed the worst Marvel show on Netflix into one of its best. But it wasn’t enough to keep the show on the air.

Finn Jones responded to Iron Fist’s cancellation today, via Instagram, with words that may give fans hope that Danny’s journey will continue in some form. The actor stated:

“With every end is a new beginning. I have an enormous amount of love and respect for everyone involved with the last two seasons of this show. Defending the greatest city in the world amongst the most talented and warmest people has been a privilege and a joy. Blessed to have taken this journey and grateful for the ongoing support.”

The news of Iron Fist’s cancellation is particularly shocking due to the groundwork that the second season laid out for a third. It wouldn’t have been so surprising had the show’s run ended after its disappointing first outing. The seson 2 finale left many fans exited, though, by the prospect of Colleen Wing as NYC’s new Iron Fist, as well as Danny and Ward setting off on a journey to search for Orson Randall. This opened the series up for some exciting new storylines that could now remain unfinished. That may or may not be the case, considering the reaction of Jones, as well the sentiments from Netflix and Marvel TV.

The most curious part of Jones’s statement is the way that it echoes the the joint one made by Netflix and Marvel, which claimed that “the Immortal Iron Fist will live on.” It is unclear if this is simply a reference to the character’s name or if there is more to the story. However, Jones’s own words make it seem as though viewers haven’t seen the last of Danny Rand. He did appear in the sophomore outing of Luke Cage and there has been speculation that the two will team-up in a Heroes for Hire series. That’s not the only option, however, considering fan hopes for a show centering on Daughters of the Dragon, which Danny could also pop in on. It’s too soon to tell if Iron Fist‘s story has ended, but, at this point, little seems certain.
