President Donald Trump will honor seven American icons with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Nov. 16, including baseball legend Babe Ruth, former NFL MVP Alan Page and Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach, according to a White House press release.
The Medal of Freedom is the United States’ highest civilian honor and is awarded by the president to individuals who have contributed to the security or national interests of the country.
Known as one of the best baseball players in history, George Herman “Babe” Ruth Jr. dominated the big leagues for 15 seasons, setting records that still stand, including his lifetime .690 slugging percentage. During his career, Ruth had 714 home runs, 2,873 hits, 2,174 runs and was walked 2,062 times. The Bambino led the New York Yankees to seven American League championships and four World Series titles. He died in 1948.
Page played 15 seasons in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears, starting four Super Bowls. He was 1971 MVP and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988. During his time with the Vikings, Page earned his law degree and practiced law in the offseason. He won a seat on the Minnesota Supreme Court in 1992, where he served for more than 20 years.
Roger Staubach played football at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1963. After graduation, Staubach volunteered to fight in the Vietnam War. He went on to have a Hall of Fame NFL career, playing 11 seasons and leading the Dallas Cowboys to two Super Bowl titles.
The other recipients are Elvis Presley, Sen. Orrin G. Hatch, doctor and humanitarian Miriam Adelson and Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia.
