Illinois head coach Brad Underwood began his remarks by acknowledging the previous night’s death of Tex Winter, a coaching legend credited for pioneering the triangle offense. “Truly one of the great innovators of the game,” Underwood said of the man who, like him, had Kansas State connections.

Winter also coached at Northwestern for five seasons in the 1970s, and current Northwestern head coach Chris Collins mentioned Winter as well.

He also had a humorous exchange with his senior forward Vic Law, who grabbed the microphone to ask a question (see below).

“This Vic Law guy seems very interesting, seems like a dynamic guy,” Law said, impersonating a reporter.” I want to know how you’re going to use him this year.”

Collins didn’t miss a beat. “I hope he plays some defense,” he said before giving a more thorough response.

“That was a good answer,” Law said. “I’m ready for practice.”
