There has been enough speculation and conversation concerning Meghan Markle’s dogs at this point, that frankly we need a Homeland-style chart to keep track of what is going on. A brief refresher: when Meghan met Prince Harry, she had two rescue dogs, Guy and Bogart. When she started seriously dating Harry and moved to London, though, she only brought one dog, Guy (a beagle), with her. Bogart remained in Canada, though his whereabouts have never been made quite clear (the royal press secretary said only that Bogart would be living with “very good friends” in Canada—yes, the royal press secretary released an official statement on this). The reason given was that Bogart was too old to make the journey to London. Guy, meanwhile, has been living quite the life in London, as he was pictured at one point riding in a car with the Queen.
O.K., so, we have Guy in London with Meghan and Harry, and Bogart in Canada with unnamed friends (we won’t even get into the fact that Bogart reportedly has a twin named Otto—that’s a different blog post for a different time). Now, a few months ago, reports claimed that Meghan and Harry had adopted a new dog, a black lab named Oz (royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith reported the name). A few weeks later, a woman who looked an awful lot like Meghan was photographed outside the palace with a dog, but the palace claimed the woman was not in fact the Duchess of Sussex (even though the reporter who tweeted the photo claimed to have spoken with the woman, whom she was sure was Meghan). The dog in that photo was not a black lab, nor was it Guy the beagle.
Are you still with us? Great.
Today, during their day trip in Sussex, Meghan and Harry were given a “family portrait,” and, in examining it, Meghan confirmed that the new dog is a “she,” but said that people keep “getting her name wrong.” So this means that the new dog is not named Oz! What is her actual name? Is she a black lab?? Is she the dog in the Not Meghan photo?? And, we are still so curious, where is Bogart actually living now? (Royal reporter Rebecca English notes this is similar to the mystery surrounding Kate and William’s dog, Lupo, before his identity was eventually revealed.) In the meantime, we wait, not so patiently, for answers.
