Red Dead Redemption 2 is set to be one of the biggest video game launches of the year, and if what we’ve played in our early hands-on is any indication, the game itself is going to be vast and varied. For years now Rockstar Games has created huge, compelling worlds and filled them with activities that span the gamut, from the weird and wonderful missions of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Bully to the drug-addled stumble through chaos and destruction that is Max Payne 3.
Then there’s the deliberate and considered investigation gameplay of L.A. Noire, the more grounded realism of Grand Theft Auto IV, and the focus on characterisation–both of place and person–in Grand Theft Auto V. All of this has allowed Rockstar Games’ various studios to accumulate a wealth of experience in different game design disciplines. And it seems that all of that experience is now being poured into one game: Red Dead Redemption 2.
In the first episode of Quickdraw, a new weekly series dedicated to Red Dead Redemption 2, we explore Rockstar’s history, taking a look at some of its biggest games up until this point to find the gameplay strands that have been weaved together to form the DNA of Red Dead Redemption 2. Check it out in the video above.
Once you’re done watching, we’ve got plenty more Red Dead Redemption 2 for you to immerse yourself in. You can watch us discuss our experience with the game in our Red Dead Redemption 2 preview and we also recounted some of the strange encounters we had while playing it. We also recently got some insight into how Red Dead Redemption 2’s health and Core systems work; these are important to main character Arthur Morgan’s development, so it’s worth reading up on.
Red Dead Redemption 2 launches on October 26, 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One. Pre-orders are available now at a number of in-store and online retailers, and there’s some extra content tied to specific platforms. You can find out about all that in this Red Dead Redemption 2 pre-order guide and see the timed exclusive DLC here.
