Nintendo fans are still waiting for the Switch to get media entertainment.
Both PS4 and Xbox One players have been able to watch YouTube and Netflix, but Nintendo fans have been left hanging.
The hybrid console is perfect for streaming media content because of its ARM-based processor.
Fans are still holding out hope, because Netflix is already available on other Nintendo devices, such as the Wii, Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS.
Is Netflix coming to Nintendo Switch?
Netflix’s Scott Mirer, VP of the streaming service’s device partnerships, insinuated in a Q&A that Netflix is on board when it comes to the Switch.
However, it seemed like Nintendo is not yet ready for that to happen, according to Mobile Syrup.
He said: “In the case of the Switch, they were very focused at launch not on video-use cases, but on gaming cases, video was not a priority for them.
“Whether that changes over time, we have a great relationship with them and look at the possibility of the Switch. We each have opportunity cost around that, but at some point, it may happen.”
Many expected a Switch/Netflix announcement to be made at this year’s E3.
Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, confirmed they had been wanting to focus on making a gaming-first platform, and that has been achieved.
He continued: “Right now, we enable Hulu on the platform, we’ve said that other services will come in due time.
“For us, we want to make sure that we continue driving the install base for Nintendo Switch, continue to have great games for the platform.
“In terms of what’s next on the streaming side, you’re gonna have to talk to those individual providers in terms of where they stand and what they are working on.”
Another rumour of a Nintendo/Switch partnership started swirling after Best Buy listed a Nintendo Switch bundle including a microSD card which supports Netflix and YouTube.
However, those specific elements have been removed now.
It definitely seems like a Switch/Netflix partnership is in the cards.
When is Netflix coming to Nintendo Switch?
It could be that Nintendo is just waiting for the opportune moment to drop Netflix on Switch.
A perfect time to release the vide-streaming service would be this Autumn, after their pay-for online services go live in the second half of September.
When this happens Nintendo will earn $20 a year from each online Switch user, and Netflix would very likely be part of that.
It would certainly be an extra incentive for players to pay the subscription fee.
However, as there hasn’t yet been an official Nintendo Switch Netflix release date, don’t expect one in 2018.
