The Cleveland Browns finally ended their 17-game losing streak with a tie in Week 1. The Browns blew a chance to win the game, but a tie is better than extending a long losing streak. They hope to post a win for the first time since the 2016 season when they face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday (10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET, FOX, DirecTV or try FuboTV (free trial).
The Browns (0-0-1) can take solace in the fact that they didn’t lose to the Pittsburgh Steelers, so the outcome itself represents progress. They also rallied from a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit to send the game into overtime. However, Browns could’ve won the game in overtime, but Zane Gonzalez‘s 43-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt with nine seconds remaining in the game.
The Browns did plenty of good things in the game. They intercepted Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger three times and recovered three fumbles. However quarterback Tyrod Taylor was sacked seven times and were flagged for 11 penalties in the game.
What in the world happened to the Saints (0-1) defense in their stunning 48-40 loss to the Buccaneers? The defense which made great strides during the 2017 season, performed as if it was 2016 by allowed Tampa Bay quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick – subbing for the suspended Jameis Winston – to throw for 417 yards and four touchdowns.
The defense gave up 529 yards to the Buccaneers and the Saints secondary – particularly second-year cornerback Marshon Lattimore, was consistently burned by the Buccaneers wide receivers. The Saints had to fall back on their old reliable: quarterback Drew Brees. Brees passed for 439 yards and three touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough.
