Is Modern Family making a play for some This Is Us mojo? The long-running ABC comedy might be leagues away from turning into a soapy tearjerker, but co-creator Christopher Lloyd has confirmed that in its coming season, the series will embrace a darker side of life—namely, death. Suffice it to say, everyone in the Dunphy family would be well advised to stay far, far away from slow cookers.
“We’re handling some bigger life events in this season,” Lloyd told Entertainment Weekly. “We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it’s not easy to do because that’s a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it.”
Unlike This Is Us, which spent multiple seasons teasing the death of its central patriarch, Jack Pearson, it appears Modern Family is keeping which character is about to bite the dust a secret—for now, at least. At the moment, it’s unclear whether the soon-to-be-dead character is even a member of the Dunphy family. But Lloyd said that whoever it is, they’re a “significant character on the series”—and that the death “will be a moving event, and an event that has repercussions across several episodes.”
In its second season, This Is Us certainly made an event out of Jack’s death, airing the episode in which he died directly after the Super Bowl—a decision that paid off with massive ratings. Whether such tragedy will provide a similar spike to Modern Family, a typically gentler comedy, remains to be seen. The ABC series, which will debut its 10th season this month, certainly has a commendable record of its own—including five consecutive best-comedy Emmy wins. But its buzz has diminished over time; this year marked the first time the series was not even nominated for a comedy-series Emmy, as the series’s contract nears its expiration. The Dunphy family will remain on air at least through next year, though its future beyond that will likely hinge on viewer and critical interest—making this death a fairly high-stakes move. Whether it pays off will depend on execution. For now, though, it bears repeating: Dunphys, stay away from the slow cookers.
