After their visit to Edinburgh Castle and meeting with a V.I.P. (a very important pony named Cruachan, the mascot of the Royal Regiment of Scotland), Meghan Markle and Prince Harry headed to Edinburgh’s New Town area to learn more about one of the city’s many charitable organizations on Tuesday.

They visited Social Bite, a social enterprise café that aims to provide meals and hot drinks for the homeless and employs those who are or have previously been homeless.  Social Bite has several cafés throughout Scotland. It’s become a big success and has gained famous fans, including George Clooney, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and now, Harry and Meghan.

“It’s amazing,” Harry said during his visit to the café. “You’re doing an incredible job.”

At one point, Meghan spoke of her own experience working with homeless people at a soup kitchen in Los Angeles during her high school years. And in an emotional moment, Social Bite’s co-founder Alice Thompson told Meghan how inspired she was by the speech she gave to U.N. Women about female empowerment years ago. Meghan was so moved by her comments that her eyes welled up and she gave Thompson a hug in the middle of the café.

The organization has a policy of “housing first,” meaning they aim to provide homeless people with a place to live, and they believe that once they have that, it’s easier to handle issues like unemployment, mental health and addiction, among others.

Harry was so inspired by the work Social Bite is doing that he asked: “When are you bringing it down south? If you’ve proved it’s a movement that works, it needs to be everywhere.”

On their way out, Meghan spoke of how much the day had meant to her — and that she can handle a bit of cold weather.

“It means a lot to both of us to be here. It’s my first time in Scotland,” Meghan said, before adding,“Everyone apologizes for the weather! It’s not that bad. I was in Toronto for six years.”
