iPhone 8 Plus Cameras Ranked Best By DxOMark: Sorry, Google Pixel And HTC U11

Apple unveils iPhone 8, iPhone X and 4k-streaming Apple TV

The results are in: iPhone 8 Plus has the best-performing cameras in the market, according to a new DxOMark test. Still, Apple’s new flagship is not without flaws.  ( Apple )

Apple makes phones equipped with some of the best cameras in the market, so it’s no wonder why its latest iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have just been ranked as the best mobile cameras there are.

In a new series of camera performance tests by DxOMark, the iPhone 8 received a pretty stellar score of 92, higher than the Google Pixel and HTC U11, both of which have 90 each. But the real winner here is the iPhone 8’s larger sibling, which scored a whopping 94 points — the highest of all smartphones DxOMark have tested thus far. This essentially makes the iPhone 8 Plus the best mobile camera a customer can buy, based on DxOMark’s standards, that is.

iPhone 8 And iPhone 8 Plus Have The Best Cameras: DxOMark

DxOMark performed a lot of exhaustive tests on Apple’s new phones, and some of those tests were pretty lab-heavy evaluation processes that pushed the cameras to their limit. To nobody’s surprise, both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus gave stellar camera performance results — but not without hiccups and flaws here and there.

In particular, the cameras stand out in everyday point-and-shoot situations. When users want to capture a scene or a subject, they can whip the phone out and easily take a photo without thinking much of anything, and they’ll still get a good shot. These occasions, DxOMark says, are where the new iPhones shine, offering accurate autofocus, detail, and superior performance in their ability to capture fake bokeh portrait shots.

Where The iPhone 8 Plus Struggles

There are still room for improvement, of course. For one, autofocus is slightly slow, despite being accurate most of the time. Video performance, while ranked high, still nips at the heels of the Pixel’s. Portrait mode still sometimes deliver wonky bokeh shots, though less noticeable than the Pixel.

DxOMark includes a lot of sample photos from the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 7 side-by-side, in addition to complex charts camera nerds will surely love. Be sure to check out the full review to get a sense of how deep DxOMark goes.

The review means only one thing: the iPhone 8 Plus’s camera is the best one customers can buy. In terms of performance, of course. The iPhone 8 Plus is still a pretty expensive device to have, but this review suggests users will get what they pay for. It’s worth noting, however, that those on a budget can probably settle for more affordable options that offer more-than-decent camera performance.

What About The Google Pixel 2?

There’s also the matter of the next Pixel, which Google is expected to unveil early this October. The Pixel received high marks from DxOMark upon testing, eventually nabbing the highest score. The Pixel 2 stands a chance to beat the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus if Google made some improvements in the camera department. Expect due coverage as Tech Times learns more.
