Delhi will bank on Dhawan and Ashwin coming good, says Srikkanth

NEW DELHI: With just a win away from reaching the IPL 2020 final, Delhi Capitals (DC) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will take a shot at each other on Sunday in Qualifier 2, and former India opener Kris Srikkanth believes that Delhi will bank on Shikhar Dhawan and Ravichandran Ashwin coming good in order to tackle Hyderabad who have the momentum favouring them.
“Hyderabad have booked their rightful place in Qualifier 2. A unit that has consistently punched above their weight find themselves on the cusp of making another final. Form, momentum and rhythm all seem to be in favour of the former champions over Delhi, who seem to have lost their mojo,” Srikkanth wrote in his column for The Times of India.
DC overcame a string of defeats to beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their last league game to finish second on the points table, but in the first Qualifier against defending champions Mumbai Indians, the Shreyas Iyer-led outfit came a cropper.
That has been the story of the latter half of Delhi’s season in this IPL, but Srikkanth believes that “individual brilliance” could spur DC on against SRH.
“Individual brilliance can fling any prediction through the window in this format. Delhi will only be hoping for Dhawan to have a fun-filled day and Ashwin to come good with the ball, especially during powerplay.”
The former India captain believes that Delhi’s balanced bowling attack can trouble SRH if they can get through the top order.
“In (Kagiso) Rabada and (Anrich) Nortje, Delhi have two new-ball merchants who have picked wickets, but not necessarily in the first six overs. This is where the contribution of Ashwin is vital,” he wrote.
The 1983 World Cup winner said that the experience of Kane Williamson and all-rounder Jason Holder gives Hyderabad the edge, and the combined success of their bowlers make them the “best attack” in the competition.
Williamson and Holder played key roles in SRH’s win over RCB in the Eliminator.
“Williamson and Holder bring in loads of experience and more importantly a calm head in the middle overs. In Sandeep Sharma and Rashid Khan, there are two bowlers who possess the knack of getting wickets at any juncture. Natarajan has responded brilliantly to his captain’s demands, making this easily the best attack of the tournament,” Srikkanth further wrote in his column.
He concluded with a piece of advice for Delhi.
“If I were to pick Delhi’s XI, I would definitely bring in (Shimron) Hetmyer to boost the middle order. The think-tank has to identify an Indian option for seamer (Daniel) Sams in order to give the side a better chance of upstaging a side that is on a roll.”
