India pacers provided early advantage on the third morning with two quick wickets and then Ravichandran Ashwin removed Quinton de Kock just before lunch as South Africa’s struggle continued in the first session on Day 3 of the Pune Test. Resuming on their overnight total of 36/3, South Africa reached 136/6 at the break. The Proteas got off to a troubled start early as they lost night-watchman Anrich Nortje (3) and Theunis de Bruyn (30) inside the first 30 minutes. Skipper Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock then tried to steady the Proteas ship with a 75-run sixth wicket stand but Ashwin then produced an excellent delivery to castle De Kock for 31. Du Plessis (52*) and Senuran Muthusamy (6*) were at the crease when umpires called for lunch. For India, comeback man Umesh Yadav took his wicket tally to three (3/27) while Mohammed Shami went to lunch with figures of 2/28.

Ashwin bowls an excellent over as the first session on Day 3 comes to an end. South Africa end at 136/6 with Du Plessis unbeaten on 52.

40.2 overs: Dropped! Virat Kohli at short mid-wicket drops Senuran Muthusamy off Ravindra Jadeja. Full-length dive from Kohli and he gets there, but fails to hold on to the ball. Muthusamy gets lucky on that occasion. SA 135/6

37.6 overs: OUT! Ashwin castles Quinton de Kock with a beauty. An excellent delivery to get rid of the left-hander. Takes the top of the off stump. First wicket for Ashwin. South Africa six down as De Kock falls just before lunch. SA 128/6

50 for Faf du Plessis!
The Proteas skipper in counterattack mode now. He is dealing in boundaries at the moment. Collects two fours off Jadeja’s over. Gets to his 21st Test fifty with a boundary on the final ball of the over. 8 fours and a six in Du Plessis innings so far. SA 124/5

So, spin from both the ends now for India. Change of ends for Ashwin. But he gives 7 runs from the other side. Ravindra Jadeja to continue from the other end.

100 up for South Africa!
50-run partnership also comes up between Faf du Plessis (31*) and Quinton de Kock (25*). Square drive from De Kock off Ravindra Jadeja and 100 comes up for South Africa in 34.1 overs.

33.5 overs: FOUR! Through the on side for four. On the pads from Mohammed Shami and Faf du Plessis hits it through mid-wicket region to collect a boundary. SA 99/5

31.6 overs: FOUR! Quinton de Kock finds the fence off Mohammed Shami. Over-pitched from Shami and De Kock drives the ball beautifully through covers to collect his fifth boundary. Change in bowling for India as Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack. SA 88/5

End of 31st over: Big LBW appeal from Ashwin on the final ball of the over against Faf du Plessis. Umpire rules not not and after a thorough discussion and consultation from wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha, Virat Kohli decides not to go for the review. The Proteas batsmen are living dangerously at the moment. SA 84/5

End of 28th over: Ishant Sharma bowls the final two deliveries of his over from round the wicket. Ashwin to continue from the other end after the drinks break. SA 71/5

Umpire Chris Gaffaney gives Ishant Sharma second official warning for running on the pitch. Next time if the umpire finds Ishant running in the danger area, he will be not allowed to bowl for the rest of the first innings.

Ravichandran Ashwin completes the final over before the drinks break. India on top at the moment as an excellent first hour of play comes to an end. South Africa still reeling at 71/5 with skipper Faf du Plessis and Quinton de Kock looking to steady the Proteas innings.

End of 26th over: FOUR! Boundary to end the over. This time the ball takes the outside edge off Du Plessis’ bat and goes through the gap between the slip and the gully fielder. A disappointing over from Ishant Sharma comes to an end. SA 76/5

25.2 overs: FOUR! And straight after the warning Ishant gives away a freebie to Faf du Plessis. Wide outside off and Du Plessis hits it through covers to collect four runs. SA 63/5

End of 23rd over: Another good over from Umesh Yadav comes to an end. Quinton de Kock collected a boundary from it as well but overall a tidy over. India looking to build more pressure on the Proteas with chatter around the stumps. And it’s the first bowling change of the day! Ishant Sharma comes in for the first time on Day 3. He replaces Mohammed Shami. SA 57/5

20.6 overs: OUT! Umesh Yadav gets going from the other end as well. This time its Theunis de Bruyn, who edges the good length delivery from Yadav. Wriddhiman Saha takes an excellent catch behind the stumps. De Bruyn departs for 30 as the Proteas are in big trouble now. SA 53/5

: Dangerous leave from Faf du Plessis. The ball just goes over the top of the off stump. Mohammed Shami looking in good rhythm. He is bowling in an excellent channel at the moment. SA 49/4

17.3 overs: OUT! And the tight clustered slip cordon is straight into action. A sharp catch from Virat Kohli at fourth slip and night watchman Anrich Nortje departs early on Day 3. Shami gets his second wicket. More trouble for South Africa. SA 41/4

End of 17th over: A tidy first over from Umesh Yadav. Just a single from it. Mohammed Shami will continue. Four slips and a gully for him now.

End of 16th over: An eventful first over from Mohammed Shami comes to an end. Early movement in the air and off the pitch for Shami. Umesh Yadav will share the ball with Shami from the other end. SA 40/3

15.3 overs: FOUR! On the pads from Mohammed Shami and Theunis de Bruyn with exquisite timing on that one. Plays the ball beautifully through mid-wicket to collect first boundary of the day. South Africa and De Bruyn are off the mark on Day 3. SA 40/3

On the second day, as captain Virat Kohli hit a career-best 254 not out at the MCA Stadium, the South Africans found themselves standing in front of a mountain of runs as India declared at 601/5.
At stumps, the visitors’ scorecard wore a struggling look at 36/3 as the hosts look to take a series-winning lead in the three-Test rubber.
Umesh Yadav, who replaced Hanuma Vihari in the eleven for this Test, then dismissed the Proteas’ openers Dean Elgar (6) and Aiden Markaram (0), while Mohammed Shami sent Temba Bavuma (8) back to the hut.
Theunis de Bruyn (23*) was in the middle with night-watchman Anrish Nortje (2*) when stumps were drawn at the end of second day’s play.
